PANTUKAN, COMPOSTELA VALLEY—Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy and the leadership of the Department of Education-Schools Division of Tagum City sent all Tagumeño teachers here to celebrate World Teachers Day and joined the whole world in the so-called “gangnam” craze.

On October 6, 2012, one day after the world observed the day honoring educators, teachers from Tagum City Division took the time off for a much-needed hiatus through a beach party and a dance contest featuring the song entitled “Gangnam Style.”

Gangnam Style, which is a single by a South Korean Rapper named Psy, has gained popularity worldwide for its catchy beat and humorous dance moves.

Mayor Uy, who conceptualized the contest, said this is one way for the teachers to enjoy at least for one day in a year without thinking of the workload back in their respective classrooms.

Teachers from Tagum City National High School grabbed the contest’s supremacy, followed by Tagum National Trade School as second placer while the La Filipina National High School finished third.

Aside from the contest, teachers also lined up to experience the jet-ski ride offered by Magnaga Waters Beach Resort for free courtesy of Mayor Uy, with some of them saying they were “thrilled” and “excited” to experience it for the first time.

This year’s celebration of Teachers Day in Tagum is one for the history books, some teachers jokingly quipped.

Last year, all of them trooped to the sprawling Energy Park in Barangay Apokon to celebrate their day through playing of traditional Filipino games.

For past years, the City Government of Tagum convened all teachers at the city pavilion inside the Trade Center for a whole-day celebration courtesy of the local government, treating educators sumptuous food and holding raffle draws.
